Ongoing Clinical Trials for Dry Mouth

Currently, there is 1 ongoing clinical trial investigating treatments for dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. This trial is testing pilocarpine hydrochloride in adults with life-limiting conditions or frailty who experience dry mouth symptoms. The study is being conducted in the Netherlands and aims to evaluate whether this medication can effectively reduce the discomfort of dry mouth and improve quality of life.

Study on Pilocarpine Hydrochloride for Dry Mouth in Adults with Life-Limiting Conditions or Frailty

This clinical trial is investigating pilocarpine hydrochloride as a treatment for dry mouth in adults who have serious health conditions that limit their life expectancy or who are experiencing frailty. Dry mouth, medically known as xerostomia, can cause significant discomfort and make it difficult to speak, chew, and swallow. It can also increase the risk of dental problems and oral infections.

Who can participate:

  • Adults aged 18 years or older
  • People with a life-limiting condition or who are frail, meaning they have a serious illness affecting daily life or are physically weak
  • Those experiencing moderate to severe dry mouth, with a score of 5 or more on a scale from 0 to 10
  • Patients whose healthcare provider would not be surprised if they might pass away within a year

Who cannot participate:

  • People under 18 years of age
  • Those who do not have a life-limiting condition or frailty with dry mouth symptoms
  • People who are part of vulnerable populations, such as children, pregnant women, or individuals who cannot make decisions for themselves

What the trial involves:

The study is testing pilocarpine hydrochloride, which is given as oral drops. This medication works by stimulating the glands in your mouth to produce more saliva, helping to make your mouth feel more comfortable and moist. Participants will take 6 oral drops three times a day for a period of 4 weeks.

This is a double-blind study, meaning neither the participants nor the researchers will know who is receiving the active medication or a placebo. The main goal is to see how many people experience a meaningful reduction in dry mouth symptoms after 4 weeks of treatment. The researchers define this as at least a 2-point decrease on an 11-point rating scale.

The study will also look at other important factors, including changes in the severity of dry mouth, improvements in oral health-related quality of life, and overall quality of life. Participants will be monitored for any side effects throughout the trial. Those who receive the active medication may continue treatment for up to 12 weeks, with additional assessments at weeks 8 and 12.

Throughout the trial, researchers will collect feedback from participants about how well the treatment works, whether it is easy to use, and how it affects their daily lives. This information will help determine whether pilocarpine hydrochloride could be a useful option for managing dry mouth in people with serious health conditions.

Summary

There is currently one active clinical trial focused on dry mouth, being conducted in the Netherlands. This trial is specifically designed for adults with life-limiting conditions or frailty who experience significant dry mouth symptoms. The study is investigating pilocarpine hydrochloride, a medication that stimulates saliva production, as a potential treatment option for this uncomfortable condition.

The trial uses a rigorous double-blind, placebo-controlled design to evaluate both the effectiveness and safety of the medication over a 4 to 12-week period. Importantly, the study focuses on patient-centered outcomes, including symptom relief and improvements in quality of life, which are particularly relevant for people receiving palliative care or living with serious illnesses.
