How Placenta Praevia Affects the Body

Normally, the placenta attaches high up in the uterus and stays firmly in place throughout pregnancy. After the baby is born during a vaginal delivery, the cervix is already open, and the placenta separates naturally from the uterine wall and is delivered as the afterbirth.
