Study on Electrochemotherapy with Bleomycin for Patients with Recurrent Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer
This clinical trial is investigating a treatment approach for patients with recurrent squamous cell carcinoma affecting the oral cavity and oropharynx. The study focuses on comparing two different treatment strategies to determine which is more effective in managing this type of cancer.
Main focus and goal: The trial aims to evaluate whether electrochemotherapy combined with bleomycin is more effective than a combination of cetuximab, platinum-based therapy (carboplatin or cisplatin), and 5-fluorouracil. Researchers will monitor how well the cancer responds to these treatments, track overall survival rates, assess how long the disease remains under control, and evaluate patients’ quality of life throughout the treatment process.
Investigational drugs: The study involves several treatment options. Electrochemotherapy uses electrical impulses to help the drug bleomycin enter cancer cells more effectively. Bleomycin is a chemotherapy drug that damages the DNA inside cancer cells to stop their growth. The comparison group receives cetuximab, which targets specific proteins on cancer cell surfaces, platinum-based chemotherapy drugs that also damage cancer cell DNA, and 5-fluorouracil, which interferes with the cancer cells’ ability to produce essential genetic material.
Who can participate: To be eligible for this trial, you must be over 18 years old and have a confirmed diagnosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma that is progressing or recurring in the oral cavity or oropharynx. The cancer must have measurable areas that can be treated with electrical impulses. You need to have a Karnofsky performance score of 70 or higher, or a WHO performance score of 2 or better, which measures your ability to perform daily activities. Your life expectancy should be more than three months, and you must be able to understand the treatment information and provide informed consent. Additionally, you should have refused other available treatments.
Who cannot participate: You cannot join this trial if you have any other type of cancer besides oral cavity and oropharyngeal carcinoma. Patients who belong to vulnerable populations and are unable to provide consent are excluded. You also cannot participate if you have any medical conditions that the study doctors consider would make participation unsafe, or if you are not eligible for the specific treatments being tested.
Summary
Currently, there is one active clinical trial for patients with oral neoplasm, specifically targeting recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx. This trial is being conducted exclusively in Italy and represents an important research effort to find more effective treatment options for patients whose cancer has returned after previous treatment.
The trial focuses on electrochemotherapy with bleomycin as a promising alternative to standard combination chemotherapy. This approach uses electrical impulses to enhance the effectiveness of the cancer-fighting drug, potentially offering better outcomes for patients who have limited treatment options. The study is particularly notable for including quality of life assessments, recognizing that the impact of treatment extends beyond survival rates to patients’ daily experiences and well-being.
Patients interested in participating should discuss their eligibility with their healthcare providers, keeping in mind the specific requirements regarding disease status, previous treatment refusal, and overall health condition.
