Evaluation of Alutard SQ dog allergen immunotherapy in patients with allergic rhinitis due to dog allergy – A one-year study in Swedish practice

1 1 1 1

What is this study about?

This study focuses on treating allergic rhinitis caused by dog allergies. The main treatment being tested is Alutard SQ dog, which is given as an injection under the skin. The study aims to determine how well this treatment improves allergy symptoms in people who are allergic to dogs after one year of treatment. Additional medications that may be used during the study include Nasonex nasal spray, Livostin eye drops, and Desloratadine tablets.

The treatment involves receiving injections of Alutard SQ dog, which contains small amounts of dog allergens. These allergens are substances from dogs that cause allergic reactions in some people. During the study, participants may also use other allergy medications to help manage their symptoms. The study will last for approximately one year.

The researchers will measure how well the treatment works by checking changes in nasal symptoms and using a rating scale to assess allergy symptoms when exposed to dog dander. They will also monitor breathing ability and check for any changes in eye symptoms. Throughout the study, doctors will keep track of any side effects that may occur during the treatment.

1 Initial treatment phase

You will begin receiving Alutard SQ dog treatment through subcutaneous injections (injections under the skin).

The treatment involves regular injections to gradually increase your tolerance to dog allergens.

You will be provided with nasal spray (Nasonex), eye drops (Livostin), and tablets (Desloratadine) to help manage allergy symptoms as needed.

2 Symptom monitoring

Your allergy symptoms will be evaluated using a total nasal symptom score and a visual scale.

These evaluations will occur 30 minutes after exposure to dog allergens.

Your breathing will be measured using special devices to check nasal airflow and lung function.

3 Ongoing treatment

The treatment will continue for one year.

Regular assessments will track your progress and any side effects.

Blood tests will be conducted to measure specific antibody levels related to dog allergies.

4 Final evaluation

After one year of treatment, your response to dog allergens will be tested again.

The final assessment will compare your symptom scores and breathing measurements to those taken at the start of the study.

The effectiveness of the treatment will be determined by measuring improvements in your allergy symptoms.

Alutard SQ dog is an allergen immunotherapy medication used to treat allergies to dogs. It works by gradually exposing the patient to small amounts of dog allergens, helping the immune system become less sensitive over time. This treatment aims to reduce allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and breathing difficulties that occur when exposed to dogs. The medication is administered through injections over an extended period to build up tolerance to dog allergens.

Allergic rhinitis due to dog allergy – A type of allergic reaction that occurs when a person is exposed to proteins found in dog dander, saliva, or urine. This condition causes inflammation of the nasal passages, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, and itchy nose. The symptoms typically begin shortly after exposure to dog allergens and can persist as long as the exposure continues. Some people may also experience eye symptoms like itching, redness, and watering, as well as breathing difficulties. The condition is caused by an overreaction of the immune system to otherwise harmless dog proteins.
