Study of LY3502970 for Adults with Obesity or Overweight and Related Health Issues

1 1

What is this study about?

This clinical trial is focused on studying the effects of a new treatment for adults who are either obese or overweight and have additional health issues related to their weight. The treatment being tested is an oral medication known by its code name LY3502970, also referred to as Orforglipron. The purpose of the study is to determine if LY3502970 is more effective than a placebo in helping participants lose weight.

Participants in the study will take the medication in the form of a capsule once a day. The study will compare the weight loss results of those taking LY3502970 with those taking a placebo. The trial aims to show that LY3502970 can lead to a greater reduction in body weight compared to the placebo. The study will monitor participants over a period to assess the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.

The study is designed for individuals who have tried to lose weight through diet without success. It includes those who are overweight and have conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or heart disease. The trial will help researchers understand if LY3502970 can be a beneficial treatment option for managing weight in people with these conditions.

1 joining the study

Upon joining the study, the participant is randomly assigned to receive either the study medication, LY3502970, or a placebo. The study is double-blind, meaning neither the participant nor the researchers know which treatment is being administered.

2 medication administration

The participant takes the assigned medication orally in the form of a capsule once daily. The medication is intended to be taken consistently at the same time each day to ensure accurate results.

3 monitoring and assessments

Throughout the study, the participant undergoes regular monitoring and assessments to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the treatment. This includes measuring changes in body weight and monitoring any side effects or health changes.

4 completion of the study

The study is estimated to conclude by July 5, 2027. Upon completion, the participant’s data will be analyzed to determine the mean percent change in body weight from the baseline, comparing the results between those who received LY3502970 and those who received the placebo.

Who Can Join the Study?

  • Must have obesity or overweight. Obesity and overweight refer to having more body weight than is considered healthy for a certain height.
  • If you are overweight, you must also have one of the following conditions: high blood pressure (when the force of blood against your artery walls is too high), high cholesterol (when there is too much of a fatty substance in your blood), obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where breathing stops and starts during sleep), or heart disease (problems with the heart and blood vessels).
  • Must have at least one self-reported attempt to lose weight through diet that was not successful.

Who Cannot Join the Study?

  • Individuals who are not within the specified age range for the study.
  • Individuals who do not have a diagnosis of obesity or overweight.
  • Individuals who are part of a vulnerable population that the study is not designed to include.
  • Individuals who have any medical condition or are taking any medication that could interfere with the study results.
  • Individuals who are unable to comply with the study procedures or follow-up requirements.
  • Individuals who are currently participating in another clinical trial.
  • Individuals who have a history of certain medical conditions that the study excludes.
  • Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Trial locations

LY3502970 is an investigational medication being studied for its potential to help reduce body weight in adults who are either obese or overweight and have related health conditions. The trial aims to determine if this medication is more effective than a placebo in achieving weight loss. Participants take this medication orally once a day.

Investigated diseases:

Obesity – A condition characterized by excessive body fat accumulation that may impair health. It develops when calorie intake consistently exceeds calorie expenditure, leading to weight gain. Over time, this can result in increased fat storage, particularly around the abdomen. Obesity is often associated with a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits. It can lead to various health issues, including joint problems and metabolic disorders. The progression of obesity can vary, with some individuals gaining weight rapidly, while others may experience a more gradual increase.

Overweight – A condition where an individual has more body weight than is considered healthy for their height. It occurs when there is an imbalance between calories consumed and calories burned. Over time, this can lead to an increase in body fat, although not as excessive as in obesity. Being overweight can be a precursor to obesity if lifestyle changes are not made. It is often linked to a lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating patterns. The progression can be slow or fast, depending on various factors, including genetics and lifestyle choices.

Overweight or Obesity – This term encompasses both conditions where there is an excess of body weight or fat. It involves a spectrum ranging from slightly above normal weight to significantly high levels of body fat. The progression from overweight to obesity can occur if weight gain continues unchecked. Both conditions are influenced by similar factors, such as diet, physical activity, and genetics. They can lead to similar health complications if not addressed. The transition between these states can vary widely among individuals.
