Ongoing Clinical Trials for Bronchitis
There are currently 2 ongoing clinical trials investigating treatments for bronchitis. These studies focus on evaluating herbal medicinal products containing extracts from thyme, ivy leaves, and primrose root for treating acute bronchitis in both children and adults. The trials are taking place in Hungary and Germany.

Study on the Effectiveness of Elixirium Thymi Compositum for Treating Acute Bronchitis in Children
This clinical trial is investigating a herbal treatment for acute bronchitis in children. Acute bronchitis occurs when the airways in the lungs become inflamed, often causing coughing and difficulty breathing. The study is examining Elixirium thymi compositum, an oral solution containing liquid extract of thyme, a herb traditionally used for easing coughs and respiratory issues.
Who can participate:
- Children aged between 6 and 17 years old
- Those diagnosed with acute bronchitis
- Children with a Bronchitis Severity Score between 5 and 12
- Both boys and girls are eligible
Who cannot participate:
- Patients with any other respiratory illness besides acute bronchitis
- Children currently taking antibiotics for any reason
- Those with known allergies to any ingredients in the study medication
- Children with a history of severe allergic reactions to medications
- Those with chronic illnesses requiring regular medication
- Children who participated in another clinical trial within the last 30 days
- Those unable to follow study procedures or attend required visits
What the trial involves: The study uses a double-blind design, meaning neither participants nor researchers know who receives the active treatment or placebo. Children will take the assigned oral solution as directed and be monitored for changes in their symptoms. The main focus is measuring how well the treatment reduces the severity of bronchitis symptoms using the Bronchitis Severity Score. The study also tracks any side effects to assess safety and aims to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in treating this condition. The trial is expected to conclude by March 31, 2026.
Investigational medication: Elixirium thymi compositum is made from a combination of natural ingredients, including thyme, which may help with respiratory issues. The goal is to reduce symptoms like coughing and difficulty breathing while decreasing the need for antibiotics.
Study on the Effectiveness of Thyme Herb Extract, Primrose Root Tincture, and Ivy Leaf Extract for Patients with Acute Bronchitis
This trial is comparing three different herbal medicines for treating acute bronchitis in adults. The condition causes inflammation of the airways, leading to coughing and breathing difficulties. The study will evaluate Prospan Hustentropfen (containing ivy leaf extract), Bronchicum Tropfen (containing thyme herb and primrose root tincture), and Bronchipret Tropfen (containing thyme herb and ivy leaf extracts).
Who can participate:
- Adults between 18 and 75 years of age
- Those with acute bronchitis symptoms present for 48-72 hours before starting treatment
- Patients in good health apart from bronchitis
- Those with a Bronchitis Severity Score of at least 10 points
- Patients with a Cough Severity score of at least 50 mm on a 100 mm Visual Analog Scale
- Those able to understand and follow study rules
- Patients who provide written informed consent
Who cannot participate:
- Patients with chronic bronchitis, a long-term inflammation of the airways
- Those with asthma, where airways become narrow and swollen
- Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which blocks airflow and makes breathing difficult
- Those who had a lung infection in the past 4 weeks
- Patients with known allergies to the study medications
- Those currently taking medications that might interfere with study treatment
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Patients who participated in another clinical trial in the last 30 days
- Those with other medical conditions that doctors believe might make participation unsafe
What the trial involves: Participants will be randomly assigned to receive one of the three herbal medicinal products. All medications are taken orally as liquids. The treatment lasts for 7 days, during which patients attend follow-up visits on days 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. During these visits, doctors reassess the Bronchitis Severity Score and Cough Severity to monitor progress and evaluate treatment effectiveness. The goal is to determine if these herbal treatments are equally effective in managing acute bronchitis symptoms.
Investigational medications: The trial evaluates three herbal medicinal products, each containing different combinations of plant extracts. These include ivy leaf extract, thyme herb extract, and primrose root tincture, which work by soothing the respiratory tract, reducing inflammation, and enhancing mucus clearance.
Summary
Currently, 2 clinical trials are investigating herbal treatments for acute bronchitis. One trial focuses on children aged 6 to 17 in Hungary, while the other targets adults aged 18 to 75 in Germany. Both studies emphasize natural plant-based remedies, particularly those containing thyme extract, which appears across both trials. The Hungarian study aims to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in pediatric cases, while the German trial compares the effectiveness of three different herbal formulations. These trials reflect growing interest in alternative, plant-based approaches to managing respiratory conditions, particularly for a condition that is often self-limiting but can cause significant discomfort. Both studies use validated scoring systems to objectively measure symptom severity and treatment effectiveness.
